Profile: Carlton Dampier, MD

Sickle cell expert Dr. Carlton Dampier serves as the program director for the Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute's (ACTSI) Ethics, Regulatory Knowledge, & Support (ERKS) program, along with also supporting the ACTSI's Clinical & Translational Research for Pediatrics Program (CTRPP). Dr. Dampier is the medical director for the Office for Clinical Research, the assistant dean of clinical research, and professor of Pediatrics for the Emory University School of Medicine. He also serves on the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Dr. Dampier's areas of interest and research include clinical trials in sickle cell disease, measurement science of patient and parent-reported outcomes, and symptom management in sickle cell disease, particularly pain. Through his work with the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service, Dr. Dampier studies the treatment of blood disorders and cancer in infants, children, and adolescents. He is also working to expand Emory's clinical trials enterprise and partnerships through Emory's Office of Clinical Research. He has authored/co-authored more than 40 clinical or research articles, book chapters, and manuscripts for publication in medical journals, has been an invited lecturer in more than 40 national and international conferences on sickle cell disease or pain management, and has reviewed eight journals.

He came to Emory from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, where he was associate chair for research and medical director, Marian Anderson Sickle Cell Anemia Care and Research Center.
