K-Club

The K-Club is an educational forum providing support and advice to young investigators on obtaining research career development awards. Researchers, junior faculty, and fellows interested in academic research careers should attend.

K-Club meets monthly and provides lunch. RSVP is required. K-Club is sponsored by the Emory+Children's Pediatric Research Center, the Center for AIDS Research, Georgia CTSA, and Emory University Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine.

The club is co-led by Stacy S. Heilman, PhD, assistant professor, Emory University Department of Pediatrics and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Georgia CTSA MSCR scholar Andi L. Shane, MD, MPH, MSc, associate professor, Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine.

K-Club Facts and Stats

K-Club was originally conceived in the fall of 2009 by Drs. Heilman and Shane and Dr. Miriam Vos, a previous NIH K23 grantee, with the objective of providing a forum to assist pediatric fellows and junior faculty with successful career development and K-award applications. Over time, this successful program was expanded to include all researchers under the umbrellas of the joint sponsors including the Georgia CTSA, the Emory Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine, the Center for AIDS Research, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. These monthly lunchtime seminars routinely use a facilitated panel discussion format to educate in a practical, engaging, and interactive manner. Even though topics are recycled over time, different panelist perspectives ensure new ideas and approaches are shared. Typical attendance includes, on average, 80 junior faculty, fellows, and other interested research staff. Topics pertaining to the conception, development, submission, and post-award process related to career development awards are addressed.

K-Club Evaluation and Future Directions

The K-Club leaders are always seeking and using participant feedback to improve and grow the program including a formal evaluation and focus group assessment conducted by the Georgia CTSA and published in the Journal of InvestigativeMedicine. Follow the links to the results of our formal focus group assessment of the K-Club, and publication on this evaluation, which was designed to seek targeted input from early career mentees and mentors to inform and expand future programming.
