A Memorial to Celebrate the Life of Daniel S. Blumenthal


It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the death of our colleague and friend, Daniel S. Blumenthal, MD, MPH, on July 25, 2019.

A memorial service honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Blumenthal will be held at Morehouse School of Medicine on Sunday, September 22 at 1 p.m. The event will take place in the auditorium at the National Center for Primary Care, located at 720 Westview Dr. SW, Atlanta, GA 30310.

Dr. Blumenthal served as Director of Georgia CTSA’s Community Engagement program until 2015. He was a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control research program at Winship Cancer Institute, founding Chair of the Morehouse School of Medicine Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine and Professor Emeritus upon his retirement. Dr. Blumenthal also served as Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University.

Prior to earning his MPH degree from Emory, Dr. Blumenthal received his medical degree from the University of Chicago School of Medicine and completed his postdoctoral training in pediatrics at Charity Hospital of New Orleans, Tulane Division.  

His research involved intra-institutional evaluation assessing efforts to create and sustain programs/projects that translate research from the bench to community-based clinical settings and to communities, create a continuous community involvement process that reaches out to communities and community practitioners and facilitates collaboration to train Georgia CTSA investigators in the principles and practice of community-based participatory research. His cancer research focused on approaches to increasing cancer screening among African Americans in order to reduce disparities in this area.

He authored or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and a dozen book chapters, co-edited four books, and wrote numerous commentaries, letters to the editor and other publications.

Dr. Blumenthal was honored by the Georgia Public Health Association, named the outstanding VISTA volunteer of the 1960s and received a "Shining Light" Award from the Georgia Association for Primary Health Care. More recently, Dr. Blumenthal was elected President of the American College of Preventive Medicine for the 2015-2017 term. He additionally received the following awards:

  • Duncan Clark Award, Association for Prevention Teaching and Research, 2010
  • Distinguished Achievement Award, Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, 2009
