ACTSI Master of Science in Clinical Research Scholar's Career Progress

Nathan Hotaling, PhD, is a recent PhD graduate in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and ACTSI’s Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) program. He received support in the PhD/MSCR track through the ACTSI’s TL1 award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He recently accepted a National Research Council (NRC) post-doctoral fellowship at the NIH and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Hotaling will be splitting his time between two agencies and two principal investigators, Dr. Kapil Bharti of NIH and Dr. Carl Simon of NIST. His research will be centered on developing tissue engineered retinas for use in curing macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a medical condition that usually affects older adults and results in the loss of sight in the center of the visual field due to a damaged retina. The project will include clinical trials on which he will be able to use his clinical and translational research training. Hotaling is excited about the opportunity and added “that whatever I develop has immediate implications for clinical trials in less than three years.”

Prior to accepting this position Hotaling was working at the National Security Agency (NSA) in robotics. Before joining Georgia Tech and Emory, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Central Florida.
