NIH Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) Common Fund Program-Due December 5

The program advances a mechanisms-focused, experimental medicine approach to behavior change research. Currently, awardees in the SOBC Research Network are developing, adapting, and testing experimental manipulations meant to engage specific health-behavior-related targets, developing assays intended to verify target engagement, showing that these putative targets can be influenced by a manipulation, and that thus changing target activity leads to behavior change. To encourage the adaptation, validation, and translation of these assays in a broader range of ongoing studies and populations, the NIH is now inviting applications to four available FOAs that involve using one or more of the SOBC Research Network assays.

Research on the Health of Transgender & Gender Nonconforming Populations (R01)

This FOA calls for research on the health of transgender and gender nonconforming people of all ages, who are questioning their gender identity and those individuals who are making or who have made a transition from being identified as one gender to the other. This group encompasses individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex on their original birth certificate or whose gender expression varies significantly from what is traditionally associated with or typical for that sex.

NCATS Announces Call for Proposals for Pfizer¿s Centers for Therapeutic Innovation Program-Due October 13

NCATS announces opportunity for NIH intramural researchers to submit proposals to collaborate with Pfizer's Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI). The program pairs NIH researchers with Pfizer resources to pursue scientific and medical advances through joint therapeutic development. The CTI model is the first NIH-wide biologics initiative with a pharmaceutical partner that NCATS coordinates on behalf of all NIH intramural researchers. Goals include identifying biologic compounds with activity in a pathway or target of interest to both an NIH intramural researcher and to Pfizer, and moving the compounds into the clinic to test them.

Inaugural FDA Patient Engagement Advisory Committee (PEAC) Meeting-October 11-12

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced the inaugural meeting of FDA's first-ever advisory committee focusing specifically on patient-related issues. The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) Patient Engagement Advisory Committee (PEAC) was established to provide perspective to the FDA about the patient experience, and suggest approaches for including patient input in FDA decisions. Unlike other advisory committees, PEAC is solely comprised of patients and caregivers. This meeting will bring together patients, patient organizations, FDA, industry, and other medical and scientific experts for a broader discussion on incorporating patient perspectives in the design, conduct, and reporting of medical device clinical trials. The FDA is interested in ensuring that the committee hears a broad range of patient perspectives, particularly from those who are underrepresented in clinical trials, and hope that you will join us at our inaugural meeting.

Webinar: How Differences in the Socioeconomic Environment Modifies Genetic Variation in Cognitive Ability-Tuesday

It has been known for some time that children raised in impoverished environments do not express genetic differences in cognitive ability to the same extent as children raised in middle class homes, a phenomenon known as the Scarr-Rowe interaction. Eric Turkheimer, PhD will summarize what is known about this phenomenon, focusing on new analyses of some classic twin datasets that have not previously been available. The goal of the new analyses is to emphasize the developmental processes that underlie modification of heritability and other quantitative genetic parameters.

NCATS Data Translator Meeting-October 25

NCATS launched the Biomedical Data Translator (Translator) program to accelerate biomedical translation for the research community. Through this program, NCATS will integrate existing biomedical data to help reveal new relationships within those data and identify novel opportunities for research. The initial focus of the program is to conduct data assessment and technical feasibility analyses for building a data "Translator" that integrates data sources and types ranging from patient level phenotypic data to molecular data relevant to understanding pathophysiology. To pressure test various aspects of feasibility, cross-cutting research questions that have been difficult to address by other means will be addressed in demonstration projects to evaluate the functionality of the newly integrated data.
