The Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSI) and the Emory Research and Health Sciences IT division are proud to announce the upcoming release of the electronic Biomedical Interactive Resource Tool (eBIRT), a new web-based application used for research resource discovery. eBIRT offers resource providers, such as service centers and cores, a platform to advertise their services, and investigators a means to locate services for their use in research. With the launch of eBIRT coming in March, we are asking all core and service directors to provide us with content about their services so we can advertise for you. If you would like to make your services more discoverable to the scientific community, or would like more information about eBIRT, please write to: ebirt_support@emory.edu.

Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the NIH provided stimulus grants which will lead to new discoveries, create new jobs, and provide additional educational opportunities for students. Over the next few weeks the eRoundup will review some of the ACTSI's ARRA projects.

Winship Cancer Institute and the Center for AIDS Research announce an internal funding opportunity supported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This mechanism is intended to increase the number of faculty applying for HIV/AIDS-related funding to the NCI of the NIH by providing seed grant resources for collecting data, developing/refining methodologies, and/or developing/refining technologies that will strengthen the competitiveness of NCI applications. The Race & Difference Initiative (RDI) faculty seed grant program supports proposal development, pilot research, and other activities that advance faculty research projects. RDI invites proposals that will enhance its mission - To promote understanding of and to generate new knowledge about race and human difference in a rapidly diversifying world. Coulter Foundation (www.whcf.org) will be used to support collaborative translational research projects that involve a faculty investigator whose salaried appointment (full or partial) is in The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University and a faculty clinician investigator in a clinical department in the Emory University School of Medicine. The EMCF makes grants of up to $25,000 in support of research by Emory medical school faculty. Faculty members who are based at least 50 percent of their time at Grady are eligible for the grants, and those who are in the first 10 years of their careers are given preference. Junior faculty at the MD or PhD level from a wide variety of disciplines at Emory University, Morehouse School of Medicine, or Georgia Institute of Technology who are committed to an academic career in clinical and/or translational research and who have excellent potential to become an independent clinical investigator are encouraged to apply to the KL2 - Mentored Clinical and Translational Research Scholars (MCTRS) Program. The KL2 award provides support for didactic and mentored research training for junior faculty committed to a career in clinical investigation. KL2 award recipients must devote 75% professional effort to the program. Applicants who are successfully funded will receive salary support, a KL2 technical budget ($25,000 per year) for research costs and tuition, and some salary support for the KL2 scholar's Lead Mentor. KL2 scholars accepted into the program will receive a total of 75% salary support for 75% effort in the program. Partial or matching salary support from the applicant's division, department or other non-federal sources is highly encouraged but not required. The KL2 - Mentored Clinical and Translational Research Scholars (MCTRS) Program is supported by the Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSI/NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). On February 16-17, the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) and the Emory School of Medicine are co-sponsoring, Moving Into the Future - New Dimensions and Strategies for Women's Health Research at the Emory School of Medicine. This meeting addresses issues of research in women and cardiovascular health and disease. The event is free and interested scholars are encouraged to participate in a working group.

The new MR/PET scanner at the Emory Center for Systems Imaging permits, for the first time ever, simultaneous MR and PET imaging in human subjects. The scanner is one of four world-wide and one of only two in the U.S. The purpose of this event is to bring together the leaders of the other three MR/PET programs, and the Siemens engineers who designed the device, with scientists in the Atlanta community to explore the limits of the technology. Current medical students at Emory University School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), and other health professional trainees pursuing doctoral degrees in public health, biomedical engineering, nursing and other fields at Emory, MSM and GA Tech can apply for short-term (3 month) stipends ($5,190 of salary support) funded by the Research Education, Training and Career Development (RETCD) program of the ACTSI. This mechanism will support medical and graduate students who are interested in a short course program focused on clinical and/or translational research under the mentorship of a successful, federally funded faculty mentor.
