Scholar Links Depression in Younger Women to Higher Risk of Death from Heart Disease


Study author Amit J. Shah, MD, assistant professor of epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health and assistant professor of medicine (cardiology), Emory University School of Medicine, is an Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSIKL2-Mentored Clinical and Translational Research scholar and an ACTSI Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) graduate. His study published on June 18, in the Journal of the American Heart Association, shows women age 55 and younger are twice as likely to suffer a heart attack, die, or require artery-opening procedures if they are moderately or severely depressed. Co-author, Ian Neeland completed the ACTSI Certificate Program in Translational Researchwhile a chief resident at Emory at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, now doing a cardiology fellowship at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
